Kyenjojo District Local Government, in partnership with the Mid-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation, has launched a major water supply project aimed at improving access to safe and reliable water for communities in Rugombe and surrounding areas.

The project, valued at UGX 600,697,220, is jointly funded by Kyenjojo District Local Government and the Mid-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation. Kyenjojo District Local Government is contributing UGX 300 million towards the implementation of the project.

The launchmarks the beginning of works aimed at expanding and improving the existing Rugombe water supply system to respond to the growing demand for clean and safe water in the area.

The improved system is expected to serve an estimated 16,414 people in communities including Kasenyi, Kahungeera, Hima, Kachwampare, Nyamasobya, Mahanngwe, Kisangi and Kasamba.

According to the project design, the works will include approximately 2 kilometres of transmission pipeline, as well as the construction and extension of distribution and service pipelines.

The project will also provide seven Public Stand Pipes (PSPs) and approximately 200 new consumer connections, enabling more households and members of the community to access piped water closer to their homes.

The intervention will further strengthen the pumping system and associated infrastructure. The existing water source is a borehole with an estimated yield of 18 cubic metres per hour, with the project providing a pump of similar capacity.

To support the pumping operations, the project also includes the extension of a three-phase power line and installation of a 50KVA transformer, alongside pump controls, switchgear and other associated electromechanical works.

The project builds on the existing piped water supply infrastructure serving the Kyarusozi and Rugombe areas.The existing Kyarusozi piped water supply system was designed in 2008, with construction completed in July 2011. The system was initially designed to serve a projected population of 9,114 people by 2033.However, demand for water services continued to grow, and by August 2022, the existing system had reportedly reached approximately 710 connections, demonstrating the increasing need for expansion and improvement of the network.

The new intervention is therefore expected to increase the system's coverage and capacity while improving the reliability of water services to the growing population.

The works are being undertaken by M/s PhilDona Africa Ltd, with works expected to be completed in a period of eight months, having commenced on 23 July 2026, with completion expected by 23 April 2027.

The project is expected to contribute to improved public health and household welfare by increasing access to safe water, while also supporting socio-economic activities within the beneficiary communities.

Speaking during the launch, the Assistant RDC Kyenjojo, Mr. Thaddeo Kasaija, flanked by the Secretary for Finance, Administration and Planning, Hon Giscard Rusoke, the DISO, Mr. Innocent Ebong, and the Deputy CAO, Mr. Vincent Kyaligonza, emphasised the importance of collaboration between local governments and sector partners in addressing critical service delivery needs, particularly access to clean and safe water.

He also appreciated Kyenjojo District Local Government and the Mid-Western Umbrella of Water and Sanitation for their partnership and investment in improving water services in Kyenjojo.

He further called on the beneficiary communities to take ownership of the project, protect the water infrastructure, and work closely with implementing agencies to ensure the investment delivers sustainable benefits.

The Rugombe Water Supply Project is expected to be completed by April 2027, further advancing Kyenjojo District's efforts to expand access to safe and reliable water for its growing population.
